Balasaheb Thackeray Rashtriya Smarak

The Rashtriya Smarak building, designed by Abha Narain Lambah Associates, was conceived as a contemporary memorial space that balances architecture, narrative, and public engagement. A comprehensive narrative and exhibition design concept was developed for the Bombay Municipal Corporation, translating the life and legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray into an immersive, multi-layered museum experience.

The approach was rooted in storytelling through space. Rather than presenting a linear biography, the museum unfolds as a sequence of thematic galleries that explore Balasaheb’s evolution — from cartoonist and commentator to public figure and political leader. Immersive media, scenography, interactive installations, and archival material are carefully integrated to create moments of reflection, participation, and emotional resonance. Special emphasis was placed on experiential design, with galleries employing projection mapping, animated environments, recreated domestic spaces, and symbolic installations to engage diverse audiences.
